Ashes to BlessingsCozad is blessed with entrepreneurs with the ability to think outside of the box and Jeanie Haskell, owner of Ashes to Blessings, is a wonderful example of someone possessing that gift.

In 2012, Jeanie started a home based business of repurposing furniture. Where most people saw junk,  Jeanie saw beauty and new purpose. Her artistic talent enables her to take a piece of furniture that has been tossed to the side and turn it into a valuable and beautiful piece of home decor.

Her painting talent opened the door of opportunity even further for Jeanie when she delved into painting signs for her home decor out of her home. A high demand for them encouraged her to offer 3 painting classes at The Daily Scoop to those interested in painting their own sign. So many registered that she began to contemplate moving into a store.

She approached Larry Paulsen to see if he had a room in a store available to her and he brought her to the old Boerkircher store instead, giving her the encouragement she needed to take the next step.

In November of 2015, she moved downtown and began regular sign painting classes. Her original plans were to offer 4 Ashes to Blessingsclasses, however, the endeavor turned into 6 classes plus several scheduled private parties!

With the support of her husband, Scott, she expanded the business to include home decor in the first half of the  store and painting classes in the other half. The larger classroom at Ashes to Blessings is capable of handling 20 people for home decor sign painting.

In an effort to help other creative businesses in the area to expand, she is allowing quality vendors to display their merchandise in the store, however, the merchandise must be handmade and the vendors must be located within a 100 mile radius of Cozad.

“I’ve gotten to know so many people as a downtown business owner,” shared Jeanie. “They come to class thinking that cannot make a sign and it has been fun to see their excitement when they complete their project.”

Ashes to Blessings offer private party workshops, with ALL supplies included, for birthdays, baby showers, bridal showers, reunions, Christmas and a ‘Friends Night Out.’ This past year, Davis Family Dental and other local businesses scheduled sign painting workshops for their employees to enjoy. She has also had several kids’ birthday parties.

In the future, Jeanie is hoping to be able to schedule ‘Couples’ Night Out’ for a fun event for couples to do together. She would also like to offer a “Mens’ Night” where guys can come and paint a sign for their significant other.

The community has been very supportive of Jeanie’s efforts and continue to bring to her old doors, windows and furniture for her to repurpose.

Ashes to Blessings is open Wednesday-Friday from 10am-5pm and Saturday from 10am-1pm. For more information, call Jeanie at (308) 325-4854.
